Innovative Pedagogical Technologies in Teaching English

Innovative Pedagogical Technologies in Teaching English

   The process of integration of Ukraine into the world community as an equal partner in various areas of social and economic relations raises, first of all, the need to improve significantly the quality of education. Actually our country has a need in highly qualified sociable and polylingual experts, professionals who are ready to participate fruitfully in international cooperation and the formation of a new attitude to Ukraine in Europe and in the whole world.
   Therefore, the educational process in modern secondary school should be focuced on the preparation of a competent person, professionals who are mobile in a labor market, highly qualified experts who know several foreign languages, people who can introduce fresh original ideas and have life- long study skills.
   In order to bridge the gap between the knowledge acquired at school and real life, new approaches have been introduced in language teaching throughout the world, mainly because the traditional ones have proved to be inadequate to meet the demands of modern society.  In other words, new demands of the time require new ways of their solution.
    Albert Einstein once said, "Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results".
   That’s why teachers should apply innovative approaches in teaching foreign languages that intend to develop responsible autonomous learners who are capable to take charge of their own learning, learners who share responsibility with the language teacher in the classroom and, moreover, do further research in real life situations so as to improve their level in language learning. An autonomous learner is that sort of learner who continues learning when teaching stops. This is in fact, one of the fundamental objectives of the new approaches in language teaching.
  Speaking about innovative pedagogical technologies we may say that:
·        It’s a new branch of pedagogical science that deals with selection, conceptualization, and classification of pedagogical innovations;
·        It’s purposeful, systematyc, and consistent implementation of the original, innovative methods, and pedagogical techniques into practice;
   It’s important that innovative pedagogical technologies provide:
1.     conditions for the development of the personality;
2.     his or her right to personal initiative;
3.     freedom to self-development.
   Specific feature of innovative teaching is its openness to the future, the ability to predict, readiness to constructive actions in new situations.
Of course, innovation is not possible without a teacher-researcher who has systemic thinking skills, developed creativity, conscious willingness to innovate.
    Language teaching nowadays is seen not as an ability to teach but as an ability to make learners learn. For this reason, learner centred education puts the learner at the center of the classroom. There is a change in the view of language teaching from a set of rules to be transmitted to learners from teachers to a process in which the learner takes more responsibility in learning. By doing this, the learner becomes autonomous in language learning.
    Bedford Clay once said: "You can teach a student a lesson for a day; but if you can teach him to learn by creating curiosity, he will continue the learning process as long as he lives." So, in the arsenal of a teacher there should be a combination of methods, techniques that will improve the efficiency and quality of the lesson. As well as pedagogical science does not stand still at the same place, a modern teacher must keep up with technology advances, and constantly improve her knowledge of teaching methods and techniques, be ready to implement the advanced educational concepts in her own teaching practice. They say: "Live and learn."
   Nowadays the main method of teaching foreign languages is the communicative method. It offers a wide range of innovative methods and forms of work.
   These methods include interactive techniques that allow us to solve communicative - cognitive problems by means of foreign language communication, and which is widely used by our teachers. It should be emphasized that interactive technologies involve a teacher and learners, encourage and expect learners’ participation, use questions to stimulate discussion, emphasizing the value of answers, give participants hands-on experience, teach them to think critically and make thoughtful decisions. They mean collaboration and coeducation, where pupils and a teacher are equal, and equally important are subjects of study.
   We rely on the following interactive techniques:
1.     interactive techniques of cooperative and collaborative learning,
2.     case study,
3.     discussion techniques.
  Interactive techniques of cooperative learning presuppose communication in small groups and include such forms of work as “Merry-go-round”, “Blender”, “A Circle of Ideas”, “Jigsaw reading”, “Joint project”, “WebQuest”.
  Interactive techniques of collaborative learning engage learners in groupe communication, when they attempt to learn something together. “Brainstorming”, “Microphone”, “Group Puzzles”, “Teleconference” can be referred to this type of techniques.
   Case study interactive techniques are aimed at building interaction by including participants in the activities with specific real-life or constructed situations. Case study techniques include scenario or storyline method, simulations and role plays.
   Discussion interactive techniques are used to study collectively controversial issues or situations in the process of interaction. The example of this type of technique is a panel discussion of a suggested problem.
   To innovative teaching methods we may also refer method of "Six Thinking Hats", creating pupil's portfolio, method of integration, teaching with computer support.
   It should be stressed that all these techniques can be potencially realized in face-to-face computer-mediated communication.
   Using Internet resources and services significanatly enhances teachers’ and students’ participations in all classroom activities.
   Here are some examples of using IC technolgies in educational prossess.

WebQuests are probably the most talked-about and widely used Web-based activities in today's classrooms. What are WebQuests?

   According to Bernie Dodge, the originator of the WebQuest concept, "A WebQuest is an inquiry-oriented activity in which most or all of the information used by learners is drawn from the Web. WebQuests are designed to use learners' time well, to focus on using information rather than on looking for it. WebQuests are also a wonderful way of capturing students' imagination and allowing them to explore in a guided, meaningful manner.
   WebQuests allow students to explore issues and find their own answers. Particularly with controversial issues - such as pollution, gambling, and nuclear waste disposal - students must do more than just memorize the information. They must process it in meaningful ways and reach moral and ethical decisions guided by facts.
    WebQuests promote high-level thinking, develop problem-solving skills, and provide an avenue for seamlessly integrating technology into the curriculum. Many sites are available to walk you through the process. This activity includes several stages:
·                       The Introduction orients students and captures their interest.
·                       The Task describes the activity's end product.
·                       The Process explains strategies students should use to complete the task.
·                       The Resources are the Web sites students will use to complete the task.
·                       The Evaluation measures the results of the activity.
·                       The Conclusion sums up the activity and encourages students to reflect on its process and results.

Scribe Videos (Whiteboard Animation Videos)
   Videoscribes are videos that draw themselves. You can choose images, add texts, music, a hand, voiceovers and bring them to life.
   There is something unique about scribe videos. For some reason the viewers can’t take their eyes off of something being created. Scribe video not only grabs and keeps viewers attention. It also converts and explains your massage in such an engaging way that you will be remembered long after the screen goes blank.
Prezi
  Your Presentations Prezi is a new way to do the presentations. Prezi is a versatile app that lets you make professional-looking presentations. It's like a free, pared-down version of PowerPoint. Prezi lets you make presentations that are as casual or as professional as you want them to be. It allows you to add information to a prezi, organize it in a logical way, embellish it with audio and video and then share it with the people you need to reach.
   You may say “But we can use PowerPoint presentations. We know them quite well”.  Really PowerPoint is a great piece of software, but there is definitely a room for a change. Prezi feels fresh and easy, but still produces nice-looking presentations. It's also capable of dealing with feature-rich and complex material, and making it look good.
Nowadays teachers should be well-handed with the use of a Web 2.0. service.
A Web 2.0 site may allow users to interact and collaborate with each other in a social media dialogue as creators of user-generated content in a virtual community. Examples of Web 2.0 include social networking sites and social media sites (e.g., Facebook), blogs, wikis, video sharing sites (e.g., YouTube), hosted services (e.g. Glogster.com), cloud technology.
.Blogging
Blogging is a public post. Students can post case studies or other notes in a class blog. Teachers and students can analyze, evaluate and create the material. Blogging causes you to reflect. Teachers naturally think back on what has happened in their classroom, and often wonder what they could have done better. Blogging can help with this process, enabling teachers to keep an ongoing personal record of their actions, decisions, though processes, successes and failures, and issues they have to deal with. Blogging can crystallize your thinking. As we write, we invest a part of ourselves into the medium. The provisionality of the medium makes blogging conducive to drafting and redrafting. The act of composing and recomposing ideas can enable abstract thoughts to become more concrete. Your ideas are now on the screen in front of you; they can be stored, retrieved and reconstructed as your ideas become clearer. You don't have to publish if you want to keep those thoughts private. Save them and come back to them later. The blog can act as a kind of mirror to show you what you are thinking. Sometimes we don't really know what we are thinking until we actually write it down in a physical format.

   The rapid growth of information and communication technologies and rising computer knowledge of the students has led to the usage of such innovative technologies like e-learning, m-learning, Self Paced Virtual classes (SPVC), Instructor Led Online(ILO) and Virtual Classroom. Atually ICT support and promote educational innovations.
   As we see the impact of ICT on the educational precess is tremendous. That’s why schools should play an essential role in preparing students to act and live in the information society. In general the main goal of school is to provide the required skills for living and working in a world of continuous change.

Project Work and Multimedia Technologies

Project Work and Multimedia Technologies

   It is obvious that nowadays the biggest problem we face in teaching is to get students interested in learning. Project works prepared with the help of multimedia technologies can contribute significantly to solving this problem. They make the process of learning brighter and more involving.
   Such project works increase students’ motivation, develop thinking skills, reveal various inclinations and talents of children, make them feel more independent. It’s a kind of student’s activity, which involves their experience, imagination, knowledge and great desire to share them with others. Students become the creators but not mere receivers of knowledge. In such a way students learn by doing things themselves. It’s important that project works attract students of different levels. The result of the project work encourages the participants and makes them feel more confident and experienced.
   Furthermore, multimedia projects provide a variety of cross-subject connections.
   Projects can be prepared over a short period of time or can be extended up to several weeks.
   Multimedia projects can be divided into three categories:
  1. Information and Research projects (Power Point and video presentation);
  2. Survey projects (Power Point presentations including photos, charts, maps, graphs; different reports summarizing survey findings);
  3. Production projects (students’ video films, electronic newspapers, e-cards, etc.)
Project Samples with the Use of Multimedia
Using Pictures and Photos
Technology and materials: photo cameras, photographs, Power Point presentations, a lap-top, a projector and a multimedia board.
Unit objectives:
Students will: 1) describe the photo in English;
2) identify and describe the basic composition terms (framing, arrangement, placement, lighting, colour);
3) discuss photo images;
4) take photos, display them for the class and explain their intentions as photographers.
 Activity1. Meet My Family
   This is an individual project. For this activity ask your students to prepare Power Point presentations of their families. Tell them to be ready to describe appearances, characters, hobbies and favourite pastimes of the members of their families. Children can present the images of happy moments in their family life, like a birthday celebration, vacation, friend’s party, a new baby in the family etc. Talk to the students about photography in our lives. How many of them have ever taken a picture of family or friends? What are some other objects that they photographed (pets, landscape, historical sights etc.)?
   At the end a teacher can prepare media presentation of the students’ childhood photos.
Each student is to describe the child in the picture and, together with the class, guess who is depicted in the picture.
Activity2. Story Time
   For this activity you can use original photos or make photocopies of pictures from different sources or, if the computer lab is available, you can use Power Point. Split the class into groups of 4-5. Give each group a set of the same photographs (5-7). Each group should then put the photos in the order that, in their opinion, could tell a story. Pupils in groups develop the story and present it to their classmates.
Activity3. Virtual Excursions
   Divide the class into teams of 2. Tell them to take photos of some interesting places of their native town, which they would like to recommend to see or visit the guests of the town.  Then ask them to prepare Power Point presentation and some information about  these places. Pupils should present their project works to the class. The class chooses the most interesting presentations.
Using Films
Technology and materials: cameras, video-cameras, a lap-top, a projector and a multimedia board.
Unit objectives:
Students will: 1) discuss their film preferences;2) identify and describe general cinema  terms and professions in the media industry; 3) analyse the structure of a film poster; 4) create a movie or a movie poster; 5) explore the relationship between sound and image, the effects of basic camera shots.
Activity1. Analysis of the Opening or Clips
   Each student should choose and prepare a video of their favourite movie in English. Then in turn they play the opening sequence of their film to the class (3-5 minutes). Other students listen to the music without seeing the images. They have to guess what this movie might be about, what genre it is. After this, turn off the sound on your computer and let the students watch the same sequence but without sound. Draw the students’ attention to the relationship between the sound and image in an audiovisual medium like film.
   Students also should explain why they have chosen this or that film, and share their impressions on it. It’s very good to find additional information about the creators, actors, soundtrack and the plot of the movie.
Activity2. Film Makers
  1. Read a short story with your students. Then ask them to imagine that they are producers of a movie based on the story. They must choose the director, actors and locations for shooting  the film. Let the students work in small groups and present their      ideas both visually (by using magazine cutouts, booklets, postcards, Power Point presentations etc.) and orally (explaining why they chose this or that director/actor, location etc.).
  2. Choose some problems actual for teenagers and ask them to shoot a documentary revealing this topic. For this purpose students may use video-cameras and
  3. Windows Movie MakerWindows Live programmes.
The Meaning of Television
Technology and materials: Power Point presentations, a lap-top, a projector and a multimedia board.
Unit objectives:
Students will: 1) identify and discuss different types of television programmes;
2) compare and contrast different television genres; 3) analyse representations of different groups of people on television; 4) identify/recognize stereotypes on television; 5) summarise plots, predict future events; 6) write script proposals.
Activity1. What’s Your Favourite?
    Ask your students to form groups of 5 and discuss within the groups their favourite television programmes. Each group then prepare Power Point presentations of 1-3 most popular programmes. The students must say why they like these programmes, and what they do not like about them. In order to get a more detailed response than “I like it because it is interesting”, encourage  pupils to think in terms of time of the broadcast (convenient, inconvenient etc.); characters (realistic/unrealistic, funny, etc.); situations; action (fights, chases etc.); special effects etc.
Activity2.  Talk Show
   Divide the class into 4-5 teams. Tell them to choose some popular singer whom they would like to meet and ask some questions. They should prepare some information about the star, Power Point presentations, a person who will play the role of the star and a presentation of some of the star’s song. Then role-play the talk show.
With the Help of the Internet
Technology and materials: the Internet resources, the program Public Publisher, Power Point presentations, a lap-top, a projector and a multimedia board.
Unit objectives:
Students will: 1) use the Internet; 2) identify and discuss different types of websites;
3) develop creative skills; 4)write newspaper articles, e-cards, advertisements.
Activity1. E-cards
   Connect this activity with a coming holiday, e.g. Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, St. Valentines’ Day etc. As pre-task, give pupils a home assignment to do an Internet search and learn about the origin of the holiday, the customs of its celebration. In the classroom, ask the pupils if they celebrate this holiday. Then ask them to go to the website that provides free electronic greeting cards such as www.yahoo.comwww.hallmark.comwww.bluemountain.com etc., look at several cards in this category, write out the greeting expression in their notebook. Next, the pupils are to choose one card, write their own greeting and e-mail it to the classmate. If the pupils do not have e-mail accounts, you can help them to open one with www.yahoo.com or another free website.
   Activity2. Travel Agents
    Ask pupils to make teams of 3. Assign one city or country for every team, e.g. team 1 – London, team 2 – Ottawa, team 3 – Washington, team 4 – Sidney. Each team will represent a travel agency that develops a new itinerary for their clients. The task for (each team) is to do the Internet search on their city, find the information about the location, main sites, attractions etc. and develop the itinerary for the 4-day tour to that city/country. The itinerary should include daily sightseeing, evening entertainment, hotel description, suggestions about places to eat, cost of the 4-day tour including the hotel. Of course the idea is to “sell” the tour for travel agency’s clients – choose the most interesting and attractive sights for the pictures, find the cheaper prices for plain tickets and hotels. Pupils present their projects to their classmates by creating a travel brochure, a poster or Power Point presentation and giving an oral presentation.
Activity3. Advertisements
   Pupils work in groups of 2. They search some information about the world’s national parks and with the help of the programme Public Publisher create their own advertising brochure about this or that place. Then pupils should present their information both visually (by using, booklets, postcards, Power Point presentations etc.) and orally.
Activity4. Thematic Newspapers
   Pupils may work in groups or individually. Their task is to create a thematic newspaper with the help of the program Public Publisher. They create their own design and find necessary information on the Internet sights. Finally pupils should present their creative works.
