Introduction:
   It is difficult to imagine a person, who would not love music. People all over the world are fond of music. They listen to music, they dance to music, they learn to play musical instruments. People make their own music too. What do you know about such people? Do you know any Ukrainian composers?
  In this project, you will learn about the lives of prominent Ukrainian composers and their masterpieces. Take a moment to think about the meaning of music in your life. You will travel through the WORLD WIDE WEB in search of Ukrainian composers and their works. Through this exploration, you may discover how these pieces of music influenced our society and the whole world! 
   Finally, you have to make a presentation using a multi-media medium about one of the prominent Ukrainian composers. To fulfill what we have planned for, you have to answer all the questions. So, let's surf the Net and gather as much information as possible about some famous Ukrainian musicians.

Goals.

  This web-quest is based on the State Educational Standard of Secondary Education, the Common European Framework of Reference and designed for 8-grade students.
  This web-quest aims to develop student’s listening, speaking and reading skills through a variety of stimulating tasks, searching for information on the Internet.
   It also encourages students to become independent, active and creative learners.


Learning outcomes.

 Students will:
- expand their understanding of the language;
- expand their knowledge about some outstanding Ukrainian composers;
- develop their autonomy and co-operation skills;
- learn how to organize their work, keep records, access the information;
- learn to analyze, choose the necessary information;
- make Power Point or Prezi presentations.

Your task is
·        to make an internet research and answer all the questions.
·        to find images of some famous Ukrainian Composers.
·        to listen to some masterpieces of famous Ukrainian Composers
·        to do some extra activities about «Prominent Ukrainian composers».
·        illustrate the results of your search by examples and create a Power 
            Point presentation (or a Prezi) 

Step 1
Pat Conroy once said, “Without music, life is a journey through a desert”. It’s true because we can’t imagine our life without music. Music makes our lives brighter and happier. It inspires, gives energy and optimism. It forms people’s internal world and helps correctly understand the events of our life. Moreover, “Music can change the world because it can change people” (Bono).

Step 3
  So, we have spoken a lot about musical instruments and styles. It’s time to talk about famous Ukrainian classical composers who have made a great contribution to the world culture and their masterpieces are well-known and widely used nowadays.

A. Work in pairs. Visit the following weblink:

Using the “List of Ukrainian composers” find information about some outstanding Ukrainian composers and fill in Composer Research Sheet. 


B. Work in pairs. Find the pictures of 10 outstanding Ukrainian composers to illustrate your list. Use GOOGLE SEARCH or any other search system.

·        What information have you already known?
·        Who of the list of the Ukrainian composers do you think made the most considerable contribution to the development of Ukrainian music? Why?

Step 4                                                  
Over the centuries the Ukrainian people have created wonderful pieces of music. Music art of Ukraine is very rich, it reflects our life, our ideas, and emotions.

A. Work individually. Watch some videos, listen to musical compositions and guess who are the authors of these pieces of music. Download the file and do the task.

Famous Ukrainian composers of the 20th centuries made a great contribution to the development of music and art in general. Their work is a model for many followers.
Work in pairs. Read the texts and learn more about two prominent Ukrainian composers Myroslav Skoryk and  Volodymyr Ivasiuk.

Work in groups of four. Find information about one of such famous Ukrainian composers as Mykola Lysenko, Mykhailo Verbytskyi, Levko Revutskyi, Mykola Leontovych, Borys Liatoshynskyi, Valentyn Silvestrov, Yevhen Stankovych or Volodymyr Ronchak. Get ready to make a public speech on your topic. Illustrate your speech with Power Point presentation or Prezi presentation.

Conclusion:
Ukrainian music has always been an important part of the cultural life of our country. Music, like poetry, is the Ukrainians’ blood and soul. Ukraine also takes an active part in the world culture process. It has given the world a lot of brilliant musicians and singers. Its orchestras, singers, ballet-masters, and composers often visit different countries. Everyone finds something of individual value and charm in their unforgettable concerts. That’s why we must know and be proud of the best representatives of Ukrainian musical art.
